Durham Holds off Gwinnett, 5-3

DURHAM, NC. - The Durham Bulls broke open a scoreless game with four runs in the bottom of the seventh and held on for a 5-3 win over the Gwinnett Braves in game two of the four-game series Friday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

The four runs in the half inning came off G-Braves' reliever Buddy Carlyle who was in his second inning of work. Jesus Feliciano drilled a one-out single to center off Carlyle to start the offense for the Bulls in the seventh. Tim Beckham followed with a single to right moving Feliciano to third, Stephen Vogt then pounded a triple off the wall in right center scoring both Feliciano and Beckham, putting the Bulls up 2-0. The triple by Vogt was also the very first extra-base hit of the game. Leslie Anderson plated Vogt from third with a single to center and Chris Gimenez shot a double off the wall in left scoring Anderson from first for a 4-0 Durham lead.

Gwinnett finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the eighth, as Durham reliever Frank De Los Santos, with one out, walked Josh Wilson and Felix Pie. The next batter Ernesto Mejia (23) followed with a gigantic home run to left over the top of the famed "bull" sign in left field. The blast cut the Durham lead to 4-3 after seven and a half.

Pete Moylan, just activated from the disabled list, came in to pitch for Gwinnett in the bottom of the eighth. After striking out the first two batters he faced, Moylan surrendered three consecutive singles to Feliciano, Beckham and Vogt, boosting the Durham lead to 5-3, which would stand as the final. Moylan worked 1.0 inning with three hits, one earned run and two strikeouts.

The G-Braves got another fine start from veteran Miguel Batista. The right-hander worked 5.0 scoreless innings with three hits, four walks and five strikeouts en route to the no decision. Carlyle (L, 5-4) worked 1.2 innings with six hits and four earned runs, meanwhile Dusty Hughes pitched 0.1 scoreless inning.

Alex Colome, in his first ever Triple-A start, had a fine outing as well, working 6.0 scoreless innings allowing just two hits, four walks and four strikeouts. Adam Liberatore (W, 1-0) pitched 1.0 scoreless with one hit and De Los Santos went 1.0 inning with one hit and three earned runs. Dane De La Rosa (S, 14) worked a scoreless ninth with one strikeout for his 14th save of the season and second in the series.

The G-Braves could only muster four hits on the night. Mejia's 23rd homer was his only hit in four at-bats, as he now has a league-leading 78 RBIs. Josh Kroeger went 2-for-4 and J.C. Boscan was 1-for-4.

Vogt led the Durham 12-hit attack with a 3-for-4 night with three RBIs. Feliciano was also 3-for-4 with two runs, alongside Beckham, Anderson and Gimenez who all had two hits each.

Gwinnett (61-53) and Durham (54-60) meet in game three of the four-game series in Durham on Saturday night. G-Braves right-hander Julio Teheran (6-5, 5.16) will take the mound against Durham right-hander Matt Torra (8-6, 4.33) with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Listen to the broadcast on AM 550/FM 102.9 WDUN in Gainesville, Georgia with Tony Schiavone calling the play by play.
