Vermont Mountaineers News Release

HOLYOKE, Mass. - The Vermont Mountaineers defeated the Valley Blue Sox 1-0 in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action at Mackenzie Stadium on Thursday night.

With the win, the Mountaineers improve to 7-7 on the summer. The Mountaineers also snap Valley's five-game winning streak, sending the Blue Sox to 9-6 on the season.

With the score 1-0 Vermont entering the bottom of the ninth, the Mountaineers need three outs to come away with the victory. Valley centerfielder Manny De Jesus (Caguas, Ohio / Ohio) reached on an error. He advanced to second on the play. Blue Sox second baseman Jake Lumley (Windsor, Ontario / Canisius) followed with a single to center. De Jesus rounded third and stumbled about a quarter of the way home. Mountaineers' centerfielder Laren Eustace (Batavia, Ill. / Indiana) threw a pellet home to catcher Danny Bermudez (Cummings, Ga. / Western Carolina). Vermont tagged out De Jesus after a brief rundown while allowing Lumley to reach second with one out. After designated hitter Dave Petrino (Lowell, Ark. / Oklahoma State) grounded out to first, moving Lumley to third with two outs, Vermont closer Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif. / Eastern Michigan) got rightfielder Darryn Sheppard (Sugar Land, Texas / Baylor) to fly out to Pat Madigan (Freeport, N.Y. / Northeastern) in deep right to end the game.

The Mountaineers pushed the lone run of the game across in the fifth inning. Third baseman Austin Clemons (Louisville, Ky. / Louisville) hit a one-out single and stole second base. Eustace followed with an RBI double to left to make it 1-0, which ended up being the difference in the game.

Vermont starter Taylor Durand (Oak Ridge, Tenn. / Western Carolina) pitched well, giving up no runs on three hits and one walk. He struck out one. He earned the win in a pre-determined start, including a 55-pitch limit. Durand moves to 1-0 on the summer.

Valley starter Bryan Goossens (Hampden, Mass. / Siena) dealt seven innings of one-run ball. He allowed the one run on six hits and one walk. He struck out three and fell to 2-1 on the summer.

Delaplane earned his third save of the season in two-thirds of an inning of work.

The duo of Adam Seibert (West Chester, Pa. / Hofstra) and Drew Lunde (Sammamish, Wash. / Washington State) threw four and one-third innings in relief and combined to allow no runs on one hit and two walks.

The Mountaineers return to action on Friday night, when they host the Laconia Muskrats for a 6:30 p.m. contest at Recreation Field. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
