Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (June 23, 2017) - Three Astros pitchers combined to outduel Dane Dunning and hand the Dash a 3-0 loss in front of 5,103 fans on Friday evening at BB&T Ballpark.
The Dash (1-1, 25-47) spoiled their best scoring opportunity in the bottom of the eighth, as they had runners on second and third with only one out in the inning. However, Buies Creek (1-1, 38-34) hurler Justin Ferrell induced a fly out by Luis Basabe and recorded a strikeout of Zack Collins to end the scoring threat. Nick Hernandez fanned the side in the ninth to secure his eighth save in as many tries.
Dunning (3-3) logged his second consecutive quality start for Winston-Salem, giving up two runs over six innings of work while striking out six. The Dash dropped to 12-11 when their starting pitcher tosses a quality start.
After both teams hung zeros on the board through the first three innings, Yordan Alvarez, playing in his first game at the High-A level, snapped the scoreless tie with a mammoth 438-foot blast to right-center field off Dunning to give the Astros a 1-0 advantage.
Jake Rogers doubled Buies Creek's lead in the fifth, stroking a two-out, two-strike RBI single to left that extended the Astros lead to 2-0.
Brett Adcock (2-3) hurled the first five innings for Buies Creek, allowing only three Winston-Salem batters to reach base via a pair of walks to Telvin Nash and Danny Mendick and a double by Jameson Fisher. Ferrell contributed three innings of relief and collected five of the Dash's 13 strikeouts on the evening.
Kyle Kubat made his Winston-Salem debut on Friday evening by twirling 1.2 frames out of the bullpen. The southpaw surrendered two hits and an unearned run while striking out one.
The Astros tacked on that unearned tally in the top half of the eighth when Joel Booker misplayed a sinking line drive to right off the bat of Randy Cesar. Spencer Johnson motored around from second on the errant play to push Buies Creek's lead to 3-0.
The Dash and Astros continue their series from BB&T Ballpark on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. Jimmy Lambert makes his High-A debut for Winston-Salem and will oppose Buies Creek right-hander Franklin Perez (3-1, 2.25 ERA). Pregame coverage for Saturday's tilt begins at 6:15 p.m. and is available on wsdash.com/broadcast and the TuneIn Radio App.
