(Vero Beach, FL) - Cory Dunlap hit two home runs to help the Vero Beach Dodgers drop the Brevard County Manatees 8-5 Saturday night at Holman Stadium. Alberto Bastardo struck out 11 Manatees in six innings to earn the win. The series continues Sunday with a 5:00 PM game at Holman Stadium. Dunlap's first home run led off the second inning and put the Dodgers ahead 1-0. Blake DeWitt doubled in another run in the third and Dunlap followed it up later in the inning with a three-run blast. Carlos Santana continued the 5-run inning with a single. He reached third on a wild pitch and scored on Xavier Paul's infield single to put the Dodgers on top 6-0. That was plenty for Bastardo(3-5)who set a career-high with the 11 strikeouts. He fanned Brendan Katin three times and three other Manatees twice. Brevard finally got to him in the sixth. Charlie Fermaint led off with a double before Bastardo hit Alcides Escobar and walked Carlos Corporan. Following two strikeouts, Ryan Crew reached on an infield hit followed by an error to score two runs. The Dodgers answered in the bottom of the sixth with a sacrifice fly from Cole Bruce to make it 7-2. Brevard County's Escobar blasted a three-run homer the next frame to pull the Manatees within 7-5. Jamie Hoffmann then led off the bottom of the 8th with a double and scored on a DeWitt ground out to seal the 8-5 win. Brevard had a last gasp in the 9th. After Jose "Jumbo" Diaz entered for the Dodgers and threw a perfect 8th, he was struck by wildness in the 9th. He walked two batters and with two outs Adam Heether blasted a deep fly to center. However, Hoffmann made the catch with his back against the wall to preserve the victory. The win was the Dodgers' third in a row to match their season-best winning streak. It also pulled the club out of last place in the FSL East Division.
