Dunedin Jumps Out Early, Tops Jupiter 7-1

Dunedin scored three runs before making their first out of the game, getting out to an early lead they would not relinquish as they shut down Jupiter 7-1.

Edgar Olmos led off the game by walking Brad McElroy and then gave up a pair of singles and a pair of doubles. A.J. Jimenez's double scored McElroy, while Sean Ochinko's two-bagger plated both Jimenez and Kevin Ahrens. After a double play, Dunedin plated one more run, getting out to a 4-0 lead before Jupiter had come to the plate.

Olmos would give up a pair of doubles to lead off the 2nd inning as well, including the first of two by McElroy. In all Jupiter gave up seven doubles on the night, surpassing their previous high of five allowed.

Olmos got the hook after giving up a single and a walk in the 3rd, having given up five runs on eight hits and three walks in 2.1 innings.

Blue Jays starter Andrew Liebel also gave up eight hits, but not only did he scatter them over six innings, only one went for extra bases. In his first start for Dunedin this year, the right-hander struck out five without issuing a walk, and only gave up one run.

The extra base hit and the run came from the same pitch, the first one he threw in the 6th inning. Hammerheads outfielder Kyle Jensen blasted the ball over the left field wall for his 21st home run of the season, tying him for the Florida State League lead.

Jupiter's other eight hits were all singles, and no Hammerhead ever spent time on second base. Three went first-to-third, as Jupiter hit back-to-back singles in the 4th and 5th innings, and Jeff Dominguez took two bags on Jensen's 8th inning base hit after walking. In the three at-bats that followed those, however, the Hammerheads struck out twice and hit into an inning-ending double play.

Besides Jensen's home run, the game did see a pair of memorable Hammerhead achievements. Olmos' early exit gave way to John Omahen's Jupiter debut. The only player to ever be drafted out of Cal State University San Marcos, Omahen got a pair of groundball outs to escape the danger he inherited. The right-hander then came out and tossed three more innings, giving up just one hit and two walks, putting the brakes on the hot-hitting Dunedin offense.

The other notable achievement came in the 4th inning, when first baseman J.L. Ortiz knocked a two-out single to center field. It marked the 22nd consecutive game in which Ortiz has reached base, setting a new high mark by a Hammerhead this season. It's the third-longest active streak in the league.

Jupiter will try to even the series, and they'll do it with the return of Matt Montgomery. The right-hander, whose complete game shutout earned him league Pitcher of the Week honors earlier this season, will come off the disabled list after missing all of July with an ankle sprain. He'll face Dunedin's Drew Hutchison in the series finale at 6:35 p.m. at Roger Dean Stadium.
