Long Island Ducks News Release
(Central Islip N.Y., July 20, 2005) - The Long Island Ducks battled back from a three-run deficit to top the Bridgeport Bluefish 5-4 in front of 6,340 fans at Citibank Park on Wednesday evening. The Ducks top three hitters, Justin Davies (3-for-5), Carlos Hernandez (3-for-5) and Henry Rodriguez (3-for-4) each had three hits and an RBI.
With Bridgeport leading 4-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth, Long Island's bats came alive and lit up Pat Ahearne for two runs on four hits to take a 5-4 lead they would not relinquish. Jason Johnson started the two-out rally with a single that saw him advance to second on an error by leftfielder Peanut Williams. Davies drove him in from second and later scored on a Rodriguez single. Davies accounted for three of the Ducks' five runs, scoring twice and driving in one. Bridgeport's Gary Burnham went 5-for-5 in a losing effort.
Lance Davis (6-4) picked up the win for the Flock after tossing seven innings, allowing four runs (one earned) on nine hits while striking out three. Bridgeport's Ahearne (4-6) took the loss after surrendering five runs on 12 hits while striking out six. Todd Erdos picked up his league-leading 20th save of the season after tossing a scoreless ninth.
The Ducks and Fish will wrap up their four-game series on Thursday night in a 7:05 p.m. contest. Paxton Crawford (8-6) will square off against Bridgeport's Robert Person (0-3). Tickets for this and all Ducks home games remain available by calling 1-888-332-5600, by visiting the Citibank Park box office or by logging onto www.liducks.com and clicking on the tickets icon.
Duck Tales... It took seven appearances spread over two years, but with tonight's seven innings, one earned run performance Lance Davis picked up his first win against the Bridgeport Bluefish. Somerset is now the only Atlantic League team Davis (0-1 in two outings against the Patriots) has not beaten... The win is also Davis' fifth straight win... For the second time in the series, Tony Rodriguez benefits from all Ducks errors. The Bluefish shortstop reached on both Duck fielding mistakes tonight, as well as all three in Monday night's game... By holding him to an 0-for-3 outing, Ducks pitching and defense were able to snap Jamie Gann's league leading 12-game road hitting streak... Carlos Hernandez, Justin Davies, and Jason Johnson terrorized the base paths tonight as they have all homestand. In tonight's game, Hernandez recorded a hit and RBI for the sixth straight game, while Davies and Johnson each crossed the plate in their fifth and fourth straight games, respectively... Pete Rose, Jr. hit his seventh home run of the season on a two-run shot to right in the second inning... Tonight's crowd of 6,340, the 31st sellout of the season and 17th consecutive capacity crowd, raises the total to 2,443,571 fans who have enjoyed baseball at Citibank Park since April of 2000.
The Long Island Ducks, 2004 Atlantic League champions, play their home games at Citibank Park and are in their sixth season of play in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. They have filled their ballpark to over 100 percent capacity in each of their first five seasons and are one of the most successful minor league franchises in the country.
