DUCKS SWEEP HOPES DASHED Road Warrior bats feast on flock pitchers
(Central Islip, N.Y., May 4, 2003) â The Long Island Ducks dropped a 7-3 decision to the Pennsylvania Road Warriors today before a sellout crowd of 6,208 at Citibank Park. The loss was the first of the season for Long Island and denied the team a four-game sweep in the year's opening series.
Pennsylvania starting pitcher Adam Thomas (1-0) went five innings and gave up three runs (one earned) to pick up the win and the bullpen went the rest of the way to nail down the Road Warriors first victory of the season. Offensively, leftfielder Jerry Amador delivered the big blow, breaking a 1-1 third inning tie with a three run homer off Ducks starting pitcher Denny Harriger (0-1). Harriger allowed seven hits, five runs (three earned) and one walk in four innings. On a positive note for Long Island, third baseman Rusty McNamara continued his hot hitting, going 3-for-5 with a triple to right center in the first inning, a single up the middle in the third and a single to left in the ninth.
The Ducks take tomorrow off, and then head to Camden on Tuesday to begin a three-game series against the Riversharks. The Ducks next home game is Tuesday, May 13 at Citibank Park when Rickey Henderson and the defending Atlantic League champion Newark Bears pay Long Island a visit. First pitch for each game in the series is slated for 7:05 p.m.
Duck Tales: Kevin Baez kept up his torrid pace, going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles. He came into the game with a .556 batting average (second in the Atlantic League) and a .636 on-base percentage (third in the league). He raised his average to .700 with today's effort...Rusty McNamara hit for the cycle over the four game series. He hit a single and a double on Thursday night, a triple today and a home run yesterday...Ducks relievers Jason Dennis, Joe Cotton and Marc Cerbone allowed only one earned run on two hits over the game's final five innings...Doug Jennings, Jamie Pogue and Patrick Lennon each had their three-game hitting streaks come to an end...Today's crowd of 6208, the largest of the season and third sellout, raised the Ducks league-leading average attendance to 6002. A grand total of 1,340,724 fans have now enjoyed Ducks baseball at Citibank Park since April of 2000.
