
Ducks Sign Maldonado And White

(Central Islip, N.Y., April 9, 2010) - The Long Island Ducks today announced the signings of pitchers Ivan Maldonado and Bill White. Both players begin their first season in the Atlantic League and first in independent baseball.
"Maldonado and White will be excellent additions to our ballclub," says Ducks manager Dave LaPoint. "I'm very excited with the way our pitching staff is taking shape."
Maldonado joins the flock having played eight seasons of professional baseball. The 29-year old spent last season in the Mexican League, posting a 2-2 record and a 4.26 ERA in 17 appearances. During the previous seven seasons, he was a member of the New York Mets organization, reaching as high as Triple-A New Orleans in 2008 and 2009.
The right-hander's best season came in 2006 with Double-A Binghamton. In a career-high 48 games, he compiled a 2.51 ERA along with three saves and 57 strikeouts in 61 innings. For his career, the New York native has a 25-23 record with a 4.46 ERA in 377 and one-third innings pitched. Maldonado was originally drafted by the Mets in the 18th round of the 2002 amateur entry draft.
White will be playing his tenth season of professional baseball in 2010. He last played in 2008 as a member of the Texas Rangers organization. The 31-year-old spent most of the season with Triple-A Oklahoma, compiling a 4-1 record and a 3.54 ERA in 50 games. White earned himself a call-up to the Major Leagues in September, where he appeared in eight games.
The southpaw also appeared with the Rangers in 2007, posting a 2-0 record and a 4.82 ERA in 9 games. A native of Louisville, Kentucky, he spent the previous seven years with the Arizona Diamondbacks organization, reaching as high as Double-A. White's best season came in 2001 when he went a combined 9-7 with a 3.99 ERA in 26 starts with Single-A South Bend and Double-A El Paso. He also set career-highs in innings pitched (149.0) and strikeouts (129).
For his career, the Jacksonville State University alum has a 17-20 record with a 4.46 ERA in 277 appearances. He has struck out 456 batters in just over 452 innings pitched. White was originally drafted by the Diamondbacks in the third round of the 2000 amateur entry draft.
The Long Island Ducks play their home games at Suffolk County Sports Park in Central Islip, NY and are entering their 11th season of play in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball.
