Ducks Power Past Patriots, 8-4

Bridgewater, NJ - The Long Island Ducks defeated the Somerset Patriots 8-4 at TD Bank Ballpark on Tuesday night.

Long Island jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning after a solo homerun by first baseman Ray Navarrete (5).

Somerset tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the third inning. Third baseman Matt Hagen doubled and designated hitter Josh Pressley followed with an RBI double to drive him home to even the score.

The Ducks regained the lead in the top of the fourth inning after right fielder Dustan Mohr doubled, left fielder Matt Esquival singled, center fielder Johnny Hernandez walked to load the bases, and second baseman Juan Francia singled to plate Mohr for the 2-1 advantage.

Long Island broke open the game with six runs in the top of the sixth inning on home run by catcher Robinson Cancel (4), a two-run home run by Hernandez (4), a two-run home run by shortstop Erick Monzon (5), and an RBI double by designated hitter John Rodriguez for an 8-1 lead.

The Patriots scored to make the score 8-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning after first baseman Joe Burke doubled and catcher Jason Belcher followed with an RBI single to bring him home.

Somerset cut the lead to 8-4 in the bottom of the seventh inning. Hagen started it off with a single, Pressley doubled to score Hagen, and left fielder Michael Hernandez singled to drive home Pressley.

Ducks starter Joselo Diaz (5-2) got the win after pitching five innings, allowing an earned run on six hits. Patriots starter Mike Thompson (2-2) suffered the loss after tossing 5.1 innings, allowing six earned runs on eleven hits.

The Somerset Patriots 2010 Season presented by Ford will continue at home with a 7:05 pm game against the Long Island Ducks on Wednesday night. The game includes Seat Cushions (1st 1,000 Fans) and Disability Awareness Night courtesy of EMPoWER SOMERSET.
