Rockford, ILâ The Springfield/Ozark Ducks rallied for five runs in the eighth inning and went on to beat the Rockford RiverHawks, 8-6, in front of 1,525 at Marinelli Field.
The Rockford bullpen blew a four-run lead in two innings. Springfield scored a run in the seventh inning, then came back with the eighth-inning rally. Steve Haake doubled in the tying run. Brian Kirby followed with the game-winning home run, a two-run shot off Derrick Ellison to right field, Kirby's 13th homer run of the season.
Ellison (1-1) lost in relief. Rodrigo Mirrales (3-1) pitched two scoreless innings to win in relief. Vanderplow pitched a perfect ninth inning for his seventh save.
Ben Fjelland hit a two-run homer to right field in the fourth inning to help the RiverHawks build a 6-2 lead.
The rubber match of the three-game series is at 7:05 p.m. Friday. Bring the kids out early for Little League Bat Night, sponsored by LaSalle Bank and WIFR-23.
RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league in its 12th season.
