Long Island Ducks News Release
(Stony Brook, N.Y., December 19, 2005) - Long Island Ducks coach/co-owner Buddy Harrelson, outfielder Justin Davies, pitching coach Dave LaPoint & mascot QuackerJack spent this morning and early afternoon visiting the pediatric unit of Stony Brook University Hospital.
The visit by Ducks officials was to deliver toys to children and young adults spending their holidays in the hospital. The Ducks spent time with close to 40 patients, talking baseball, autographing memorabilia and handing out gifts from the recent Waddle In Toy Drive at Citibank Park.
"It's a special day for us," says Harrelson. "We feel fortunate to be in a position where we can give someone who's down a smile on their face and we look forward to these visits every year. The good people that donated toys during our drive have a lot to be proud of. They made a lot of kids that are spending their holidays in the hospital smile today."
Throughout the month of December, Long Island Ducks fans and local businesses donated new, unwrapped gifts for the annual toy drive at Citibank Park. For a second consecutive year, the toy drive was extremely successful, as hundreds of toys were collected.
The Stony Brook visit is one of three that the Ducks will make to local hospitals this holiday season. The first visit came last Friday at Southside Hospital, continued with this morning's visit to Stony Brook, and will conclude with a stop at Good Samaritan Hospital on Wednesday to deliver the rest of the donated items.
The 2004 Atlantic League champion Long Island Ducks' wide-reaching involvement in the community has been growing since the team's inception in 2000. For further information, please visit www.liducks.com or call the public relations department at (631) 940-3825.
