Long Island Ducks News Release

(Central Islip, N.Y.) - The Long Island Ducks defeated the Newark Bears on Sunday 10-6 at Citibank Park.

The Ducks built an earl 6-0 lead, scoring in each of the first three innings. Donaldo Mendez connected with RBI doubles in consecutive innings, part of a 3-for-4 afternoon for the Ducks shortstop. Estee Harris went 2-for-3 and scored three runs, while Brent Abernathy set the pace from the leadoff spot with three hits.

A solo home run by Newark's Randall Simon in the fourth triggered a five-run inning for the Bears, and the visitors tied the game with a run in the fifth. But the Ducks grabbed the lead back with two in the bottom of the inning, and iced the victory with two insurance runs in the eighth.

Scott Rice (1-0) earned his first victory for the Ducks, providing two and one-third innings of relief, giving up a run on three hits. David Pellegrine (0-1) took the loss for Newark, allowing two unearned runs in two and two-thirds innings out of the bullpen. Long Island's pen remained strong, as Rice, Ben Grezlovski and Joe Valentine combined to hold Newark without a hit over the final four frames.
