
Ducks Blast Blue Crabs in Series Opener

Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
(Central Islip, NY.) - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (1-6) dropped the series opener against the Long Island Ducks (4-3) 27-9.
After a quiet first inning, the Ducks offense started up in the second inning. Lew Ford singled to start the inning, before back-to-back homeruns from David Washington and Cody Puckett opened the scoring. Daniel Fields was hit by a pitch next, stealing second, before scoring on a Wilkin Castillo single. A walk and an error loaded the bases, before a Ford double scored everyone and gave Long Island a 7-0 lead.
The offense continued in the third, as the Ducks loaded the bases with just one out in the inning. A single from Jordany Valdespin scored two runs, ending the night for Sean O'Sullivan (0-2) on the mound. A fielder's choice from Tyler Holt scored Dan Lyons, before a flyout ended the inning.
Jair Jurrjens (1-1) was strong on the mound for the Ducks through the first three innings, before the Blue Crabs got some offense of their own in the fourth. Devon Rodriguez led off the inning with a double, coming around to score on a single from Frank Martinez. Cory Vaughn doubled as well later in the inning, scoring on a Xavier Paul single.
Long Island answered with a pair of their own in bottom half of the inning, with Puckett and Lyons both picking up RBI doubles. They loaded the bases again in the fifth, before Puckett was hit by a pitch to score a run. A wild pitch scored another, before a Castillo single plated Washington for the third run of the inning. Another hit-by-pitch loaded the bases again, with a walk giving the Ducks a commanding 16-2 lead.
The offense continued to pour it on in the sixth, adding three more to the tally. A dropped third strike put Robert Garcia on base, before a walk and an error loaded the bases once more. A sacrifice fly scored Garcia, before three straight walks scored two more runs for Long Island.
The Blue Crabs continued to fight, putting up some offense of their own in the seventh. Austin Green led off the inning with a single, which was followed with an Edwin Garcia walk. Johnny Bladel then clubbed a three-run homerun, his first of the season.
Another solo shot from Washington added another run for the Ducks in the bottom of the seventh. They continued to pour it on in the bottom of the eighth, adding seven more to the total. A based loaded single from Travis Snider scored the first, before a fielder's choice added another. A walk loaded the bases for the second time in the inning, before a Puckett double scored all three runners. A Fields double scored Puckett, before Castillo tripled to cap off the second seven-run inning of the night for Long Island's offense.
The Blue Crabs offense continued to fight in the top of the ninth. Rodriguez doubled in Bladel for the first run, coming across to score on another single from Martinez. An error kept the inning alive, before a double from Vaughn scored two more. A lineout to first followed, finally ending the game with a final score of 27-9 after nearly four hours of play.
The Blue Crabs return to action Saturday, May 5th for the game two of the three-game series against the Ducks. Southern Maryland will send RHP Brandon Cumpton (0-1, 13.50) to the mound, looking to halt the losing streak. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 P.M. on Saturday at Bethpage Ballpark.
