Drury Called up to Carolina

Waterloo, Iowa - On this date in 2016, 16-year-old Jack Drury was preparing to take the ice for the Waterloo Black Hawks on the road against the Fargo Force midway through his USHL rookie season; with the Black Hawks about to visit Fargo tonight, the now 21-year-old forward is in warmer surroundings, on the cusp of his NHL debut this evening for the Carolina Hurricanes.

Carolina recalled Drury ahead of tonight's game against the Detroit Red Wings. The Hurricanes missed a scheduled matchup on Tuesday versus the Minnesota Wild due to number of players in the NHL's COVID protocol. Drury signed with Carolina in July after being selected by the organization in the second round, 42nd overall in the 2018 NHL Draft.

Drury was picked following his second season in Waterloo. In 2017/18, he averaged better than a point per game with 65 (24 goals, 41 assists) in 56 appearances. Serving as team captain, the Black Hawks won the Anderson Cup with the USHL's best regular season record, and Drury ranked fourth in league scoring. His 23-game point streak from late November to mid-February was the longest in the USHL that season. Drury's seven game-winning goals tied for second in the league. That winter, he also helped the U.S. Junior Select Team to a silver medal at the World Junior A Challenge.

As a Waterloo rookie in 2016/17, Drury had produced four goals and eight assists in 44 games.

After junior hockey, the Chicagoland native had a successful two-season run with the Harvard Crimson, notching 29 goals and 34 assists in 60 NCAA appearances. With Harvard on hiatus last winter due to the coronavirus, Drury played in the Swedish Hockey League for the Vaxjo Lakers and was a nominee for the league's Rookie of the Year award. Skating with the Chicago Wolves this winter, he has 16 points (seven goals, nine assists) in 23 games.

A dozen former Black Hawks have already appeared in NHL games this season. The group includes Drury's 2016/17 Waterloo teammate Mikey Anderson (Los Angeles Kings). Another player who skated with Drury - forward Jackson Cates - could make his first appearance of 2021/22 tonight with the Philadelphia Flyers, after playing in his initial NHL games late last season.
