Drive Top Herd for Second Straight W

February 4, 2019 - NBA G League (G League) - Grand Rapids Drive News Release

OSHKOSH - The Grand Rapids Drive (15-18) stayed perfect on the season against the Wisconsin Herd (8-24) by defeating them on the road Monday night by a 108-88 final. One game after getting their first 20-point win of the season against the Fort Wayne Mad Ants, the Drive earned another against Wisconsin largely thanks to their 62-37 halftime advantage.

Despite the offensive success, no Grand Rapids player reached 20 points. Michael Bethea Jr. had a great game off the bench to lead the Drive in scoring with 18 points, going 4-of-5 from deep, to go with his seven rebounds. Marcus Thornton scored 16 points for the Drive to go with his six rebounds and two steals, Isaiah Whitehead had 16 points, six rebounds and six assists, Kalin Lucas had 13 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, Johnny Hamilton tallied 12 points, seven rebounds and four blocks and Todd Withers finished with 11 points, five rebounds, two steals and two blocks.

Michael Qualls led the Herd with 19 points off the bench and Shevon Thompson put up 15 points and 19 rebounds in 25 minutes despite seven turnovers. Bonzie Colson added 13 points, Brandon McCoy scored 12 and Nick Johnson barely missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.

The Drive jumped on the Herd early, scoring 21 of the game's first 25 points and not allowing the Herd to eclipse four points until nearly 10 minutes into the game. They stretched their lead to 29 points at one point in the second quarter and never trailed. The Herd played better in the second half, outscoring the Drive by eight in the third quarter, but it was too little, too late.

It was still not the best game shooting for the Drive (43 percent from the floor) and they shot just 11 free throws, but they used their pace to hoist 104 total shots to 92 from Wisconsin, and the Herd made just four three-pointers on 22 attempts all night (18 percent) while the Drive hit 10-of-24 (42 percent).

The Drive will look to extend their strong two-game stretch to a third game when they take on the Canton Charge on the road Wednesday night before hosting the Herd on Friday. The Herd also have a Wednesday game before playing the Drive again, as they will host the 905.
