Beaumont Drillers News Release

BEAUMONT, TX – The Beaumont Drillers are coming off an 8-6 season and are ready to step back onto the turf as training camp 2005 begins Wed., Feb. 23 in Beaumont.

"I am so ready," said safety Randy Chappell. "Those who are returning are hungrier than ever because we were so close to the playoffs last year. It feels totally different this go-around. We have a new look, a new direction and I have a great feeling heading into camp."

Training camp has grown to over 40 players

"I think we had a good start last week with media night and a great team meeting," said first year head coach Kyle Mackey. "Each player introduced themselves, talked about where they played and they got to know me. I think that's very important to start that way."

Mackey is no stranger to the game – as a player and coach. Mackey set numerous quarterback records at East Texas State University then went on to play for several teams in the NFL before ending his career in the Arena Football League.

"We have a great mix of veteran players and new guys," said Mackey. "I told every guy in the team meeting that there is competition at every position. No one is set to start anywhere right now. I am going to play the best eight on offense and best eight on defense. Competition makes players play harder."

Mackey went on to say he and first year defensive coordinator and former Driller Troy Esprit would have to evaluate talent in a hurry. The season opener is less than two weeks away.
