Beaumont Drillers News Release
BEAUMONT, TX -- The Beaumont Drillers have made two rosters moves after the 30-28 season opening loss to Odessa last Sunday. Starting quarterback Marc Saldana was injured during the first quarter after the Drillers were up 12-0 on the Roughnecks and did not return.
Saldana has since been diagnosed with a hairline fracture in his right ankle, and will out of action for at least three weeks, missing two games. The Drillers have a bye week in Week 3.
The Drillers have signed quarterback Aubrey Jones and will report for practice today, Thursday, March 10 when the Drillers take to the practice field at the Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club near I-10 and 11th St. in Beaumont at 7 p.m.
Jones, 6-5, 225, played for the Houma Bayou Bucks last year and was the backup to NIFL MVP candidate Doug Coleman. Jones, who mirrors the physique of fromer NFL quarterback Randall Cunningham, played at Northwestern State, and saw limited action last year throwing for 96 yards on 7-of-10 attempts for one TD.
The Drillers also released kicker Tyler Thibodeaux and signed Chris Stropolo, who also played for the Houma Bayou Bucks last season. Stropolo, 5-8, 190, played collegiate football at Nicholls State and was in the top five of most NIFL kicking categories last season. Stropolo made 82 of 98 extra-points and 8-of-21 field goals. He was 2-for-2 from 1-19 yards, 3-of-5 from 20-29 yards, 1-of-5 from 30-39 yards and 2-of-7 from 50+ yards.
The Drillers (0-1) will host the San Angelo Stamped this Sunday, March 13 at 3:35 p.m. at Ford Arena.
