Tulsa Drillers News Release
On a cool May evening for baseball, it took twelve innings and over four hours of play, but the Tulsa Drillers four-game winning streak came to an end Thursday night at Drillers Stadium. An RBI single by Joe Mather with two outs in the top of the twelfth inning broke a 7-7 tie and gave the Springfield Cardinals an 8-7 victory.
Tulsa reliever Jarrett Grube (3-1) was saddled with the loss. After retiring the first two hitters in the 12th, he surrendered an unearned run on three singles and an error, ending his scoreless innings streak at 22 and 2/3 innings.
The Cardinals jumped to an early 5-0 lead in the second inning. Third basemen Juan Richardson got Springfield started by hitting a solo homer over the leftfield wall. Springfield continued to add to their lead when Bryan Anderson scored on an infield hit by Juan Lucena. Tyler Greene plated three more runs with a bases clearing double.
Tulsa rallied to climb back into the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Joe Gaetti reached on an infield single and scored on a Christian Colonel double to center field. Colonel and Aaron Rifkin, who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning, scored on a Matt Miller single that brought Tulsa within two runs.
Colonel and Miller struck again with back-to-back singles to start the sixth. Chris Frey would load the bases when he was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game. Rick Guarno completed the Tulsa rally when he blasted a grand slam over the left-center field wall to give the Drillers a 7-5 lead.
Springfield responded in the top of the seventh when Bryan Anderson singled to score Cody Haether. Lucena would plate Mather on a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 7-7.
The game stayed scoreless until Mather's RBI single in the 12th.
Tulsa starter Ching Lung-Lo (2-3) pitched six innings giving up five runs, all in the second inning, on six hits. He struck out three in his eighth start of the season.
Mike DeJean, making his 2007 debut for the Drillers, pitched two innings of relief. He gave up two hits and intentionally walked one batter in his first appearance. DeJean, who played for the Colorado Rockies last season, is attempting to comeback from shoulder surgery.
Springfield reliever Jose Garcia gained the victory by getting the last out in the 11th and Chris Perez picked up his tenth save with a perfect 12th.
Miller and Colonel continued their hot streaks, collecting two hits each. Gaetti paced the Drillers hitters by going 3-6 with a double and run scored.
The Drillers will look to start a new winning streak Friday night in the second game of a four-game series with the Cardinals at Drillers Stadium. Samuel Deduno (0-1, 4.50 ERA) will pitch for the Drillers while Mitchell Boggs (2-3, 5.20 ERA) will pitch for the Cards. Game time is scheduled for 7:05PM.
