Springfield Cardinals News Release
The Tulsa Drillers hit three home runs and used more strong pitching to grab their second straight win at Hammons Field, downing the Cards on Sunday night by a final score of 4-2.
All four Tulsa runs came via the long ball, while Springfield struggled offensively for a second straight game.
Solo homers from Michael Paulk and Mike McKenry over the first two innings put Tulsa ahead 2-0, against Cards' starter Brandon Dickson.
A two-run shot off the bat of Ryan Harvey in the fourth, his team-leading 17th of the year, made it a 4-0 game.
Springfield finally got to Roe in the fourth, as Tony Cruz and Pete Kozma had back-to-back singles to open the inning. Mike Folli followed with a sacrifice fly to center field, plating Cruz to make it 4-1.
In the sixth, the Cards used a double, a walk and an error to load the bases with two outs against Roe, but pinch-hitter Andrew Brown struck out to end the threat, keeping the Drillers in front 4-1.
Roe (6-2) would finish the sixth and turn it over to the bullpen, after allowing just one run on five hits.
The Cards got to the Tulsa bullpen for a run in the eighth, when Edgmer Escalonga walked Jim Rapoport with the bases full to force home a run, making it 4-2. But with the bases still loaded and two outs, Tulsa left-hander Matt Reynolds struck out Donovan Solano to shut down the scoring threat.
Reynolds remained in the game to work the ninth and worked around some one-out trouble. Steven Hill reached with a one-out single, then moved to third on a Tony Cruz double. But with the tying runs in scoring position and one out, Reynolds fanned Pete Kozma, then popped up Mike Folli for the final out, securing his first save at the Double-A level.
Dickson (7-8) took the loss for Springfield, allowing four runs on five hits over six innings.
The Redbirds (19-23, 57-55) and Drillers wrap up their four-game series on Monday night, in the final game of the seven-game home stand. Springfield will go with left-hander Ryan Kulik (4-8), while Tulsa will run Keith Weiser (7-11) to the mound. Game time is 7:10pm and gates open at 6:10pm.
