Drillers Almost End Snowbears Streak
January 20, 2005 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Calgary Drillers News Release
The Calgary Drillers almost brought to an end the ABA record winning streak of the Utah Snowbears. The Drillers never trailed until the final 41 seconds, eventually losing 89-86 to the Bears. Utah runs their season long streak to 20-0, while the Drillers fall to 4-8.
Calgary led by seven at the half 47-40, and still by seven at the end of the third quarter. The Drillers led by as much as 12 in the first half.
Nate Driggers led both teams with a season high 29 points for Calgary. DeJuan Wheat added 15 while James Penny chipped in with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Tyrone Hayes paced the Bears with 18 points while Tony Farmer and Alex Austin each chipped in with 14.
The game was marred by a bizarre incident in the third quarter when Austin got into a heated argument with his brother, head coach Ike Austin. It ended with the younger Austin hurling a chair towards the coach but hitting teammate Curtis Millage in the head and knocking him to the floor.
The Drillers and Snowbears meet for the third consecutive game when Calgary head to Salt Lake City on Thursday for a Friday night meeting.
Calgary then comes back to face Washington on Sunday at 2 p.m. and Monday at 7 p.m. before heading out on a 2 and a half week road trip.
Sunday's game is a Family Four Pack special. One adult ticket in any price range earns up to 3 free tickets for family members with I.D.
