Weather Problems Force Drillers Change

January 21, 2005 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Calgary Drillers News Release

The Calgary Drillers of the ABA have been forced to make a change in their next two home games. Storms that have closed roads in British Columbia and Washington might have prevented the Washington Blackhawks from making it to Calgary in time for Sunday afternoon's game at the Corral. As the result of that uncertainly the Drillers have been forced to relinquish their dates at the Corral this Sunday afternoon and Monday night.

Washington is scheduled to play at home tonight and the team was to have started the drive to Calgary in two vans on Saturday morning. However, if they failed to get to Calgary by Saturday night or Sunday morning the Drillers would have still absorbed the building rental fee at the Corral.

"The people at the building have been great", said Peter Young, director of basketball operations. "A Romaine seminar scheduled for the Convention Center at our team hotel was cancelled this weekend because of the road closures and that set off warning bells. We conferred with the Corral and decided it would be best not to absorb the expenses of converting the building from hockey to basketball on the chance there might not be a game."

The Drillers spent all day Friday trying to secure an alternate gym in case the Blackhawks did finally make it to Calgary, but all suitable facilities including their practice venue at Rundle College were unavailable.

"We apologize to the fans who were expecting a game on Sunday", said general manager Ruby Richman.

The Drillers play the unbeaten Utah Snowbears tonight and will be traveling back from Salt Lake City by bus. They are not expected to encounter the inclement weather that is hitting the North West.

Fans that have purchased tickets to either game against Washington will get a refund or two tickets to a future game.

The Drillers will now practice at Rundle on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and then head out on a 15 day road trip to Seattle, Denver, Las Vegas and Portland.
