Atlantic City Surf News Release
Atlantic City, N.J. - Surf 3B Josh Burrus scampered home on a ninth-inning wild pitch, giving Atlantic City a 9-8, come-from-behind victory over Quebec to complete a game that did not end until nearly 3:00 a.m., seven hours after it started. With the win, the Surf stay alive in the Can-Am League first-round series, cutting the Capitales' lead to two games to one.
Quebec jumped on the board with three runs in the first. RF Mike Goss led off the game with a double to right center, moved to third on CF Goefrey Tomlinson's single, and scored when 3B Patrick Deschenes reached on an error by Atlantic City 3B Gil Zayas. The Capitales then scored on RBI singles by DH Patrick Scalabrini and LF Alex Nunez, making it 3-0.
Quebec added to its lead in the fifth on SS Issael Gonzalez's RBI fielder's choice, and then scored three more in the sixth on RBI singles by 1B Eddie Lantigua, Nunez and 2B Josh Colafemina.
The Surf started their comeback in the bottom of the fifth; after DH Clyde Williams drove in SS Anthony Granato on a fielder's choice, 1B Eddie Kim hit a three-run bomb to right, followed by 2B Brad Thoma's solo shot, cutting the deficit to 8-5.
In the eighth, Atlantic City added a runs on CF Lucas Taylor's RBI double, before Taylor ran home on a wild pitch to make it 8-7.
At this point, the game was stopped due to rain, and would not resume until three hours and 18 minutes later. The Surf loaded the bases with one out when the game restarted, but C William Plaza grounded into a double play, keeping the Capitales' lead at 8-7.
Quebec placed runners on first and third in its half of the ninth, but could not score off of Atlantic City reliever Kyle George. In the Surf's half of the ninth, Kim walked, Burrus singled and PH Heath Keel was hit by a pitch to load the bases. With Taylor then coming to bat, a light failure caused another 20-minute delay. When play once again resumed, Jason Schutt was relieved by David Wasylak, who promptly threw two consecutive wild pitches, enabling PR Jason Hurst and Burrus to score for the victory.
Granato, Plaza and Burrus each had two hits for Atlantic City, while Nunez went 5-for-5 with two runs scored for Quebec.
The two teams meet in Game Four of the series on Saturday evening, with the Surf's Charlie Ruud (0-0) opposing the Capitales' Orlando Trias (1-0).
