Dragons split uprights with Bironas
November 9, 2004 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
New York Dragons News Release
The New York Dragons have solidified one of the most unheralded positions in the Arena Football League with the acquisition of kicker Rob Bironas, who was one of the most sought out free agent kickers this off-season. The move brings the team's roster up to 34 out of a possible 37 players. Bironas last kicked for the Pittsburgh Steelers during the 2004 NFL pre-season and appeared in two games, connecting on both his field goal attempts as well as all three extra points.
"Rob has been on our radar screen for quite some time now and we're thrilled to have him a part of our team," said Dragons Director of Player Personnel Rory Vacco. "We were looking to sign him last season before he decided to remain closer to home in Carolina. He was a player right on top of our free agent list and it's always a nice feeling when you get a player like that signed.
Bironas (6-0, 200) was a member of the Carolina Cobras in 2004 and ranked third on the team with 121 points. He converted 17-of-40 field-goal attempts and 70-of-89 extra points in his only season with the Cobras. Last season, he ranked ninth in the AFL in kicking points while attempting the fewest amount of extra-point tries out of all other full-time kickers in the league.
In 2003, Bironas played in 12 games with the Charleston Swamp Foxes of the af2 where he converted 12-of-27 field-goal attempts during the season and ranked among team leaders with 94 points. Bironas was invited to training camp with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2003, but was released prior to the regular season. He originally signed with the Green Bay Packers in 2002 before being released during training camp.
Bironas spent three seasons at Auburn, from 1996 to 1999, prior to transferring to Georgia Southern University for his senior season in 2000. He was a member of the GSU Eagles' 2000 NCAA Division I-AA National Championship team. In that season, he connected on seven of thirteen field goal attempts and scored a total of 39 points.
The New York Dragons will open up their 2005 season at home on Super Bowl Sunday, February 6, 2005, when they kickoff against the Dallas Desperados at the Nassau Coliseum. Deposits for 2005 Dragons season tickets are now being taken. Call 1-866-AFL-TIXX or visit NewYorkDragons.com for more information.
