Tampa Bay Storm News Release

TAMPA, FL -- The Tampa Bay Storm signed former New York Giants center Omar Smith on Tuesday, head coach Tim Marcum announced.

Smith, who prepped at Nova High School in Davie, Fla., played the 2002 and 2003 seasons for the Giants, including New York's Wild Card playoff game against the San Francisco 49ers following the 2002 regular season.

Smith (6-2, 300, Kentucky) originally signed with the St. Louis Rams as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2001 following a successful playing career at the University of Kentucky. With the Wildcats, Smith earned first-team All-SEC honors and was the top blocker for the nation's second ranked passing offense.

Following his time with St. Louis, Smith was signed as a member of the Oakland Raiders' practice squad for one week during the 2001 season. After the 2001 season he joined the Giants, where he played in 12 games in two seasons. Smith's most recent NFL experience came during the Giants' 2004 training camp.

Born in Spanish Town, Jamaica, Smith becomes the third center under contract for the Storm. Tampa Bay also has veteran centers Rod Williams and Louis Williams on its roster.

The five-time World Champion Tampa Bay Storm open the 2005 season on January 29 when they host the defending ArenaBowl champion San Jose SaberCats at the St. Pete Times Forum. Season tickets for the 2005 season are on sale now at the St. Pete Times Forum Box Office. Season tickets may also be purchased by calling (813) 301-6600 or online at www.tampabaystorm.com.
