Dragons Players Serrano, Mendez Honored

Dayton, Ohio-The Dayton Dragons announced today that right-handed pitcher Mark Serrano and third baseman Carlos Mendez have earned special honors.

Serrano was named today as the Cincinnati Reds Minor League Pitcher of the Month for August.

Mendez was selected today as Midwest League Batter of the Week for the week of August 31-September 7.

Serrano, who was honored last week as the Dragons/1410 ESPN Radio Pitcher of the Month for August, made six starts for Dayton during the month, going 2-1 with a 2.08 earned run average. Opposing batters combined to hit just .180 against Serrano for the month. Serrano pitched in 11 games with the Dragons this seaon, going 3-1 with a 2.20 ERA. He was the Cincinnati Reds sixth round draft pick in 2009 out of Oral Roberts University.

Former Dragons third baseman Juan Francisco was selected as the Reds Batter of the Month for August. Francisco batted .381 with eight home runs and 27 runs batted in, splitting the month between Double-A Carolina and Triple-A Louisville. Francisco led the Reds organization in home runs (27) and runs batted in (93) in 2009.

Mendez led the Midwest League in batting average by 107 points during the week of August 31-September 7 to earn the MWL honor. He hit .636, going 14 for 22. Mendez finished the season with a batting average of .308 to rank second among all Reds minor league players with at least 300 at-bats, trailing only former Dragons outfielder Chris Heisey (.314). For the year, Mendez hit five home runs and drove in 67 runs.

The Dragons completed their 10th season in the Midwest League on Monday.
