Whitecaps gear up for championship run

After finishing up another winning season, the West Michigan Whitecaps are ready for a shot at another Midwest League championship.

The Whitecaps will take on the Great Lakes Loons in the first round. The best-of-three series kicks off at Great Lakes on Wednesday, September 9 at 7:05 p.m. Casey Crosby is scheduled to take the mound against Aaron Miller. Game 2 is slated for Thursday, September 10 at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Ballpark. Adam Wilk, a 2009 draft pick, will face Jon Michael Redding, who won a league-leading 16 games this season.

If necessary, Game 3 will take place at home on Friday, September 11 at 7:00 p.m.

The Whitecaps are in the hunt for their sixth Midwest League championship. They've qualified for the playoffs 13 times in the franchise's 16 seasons.

The Whitecaps had one of their best offensive seasons this year. They set many franchise records including team batting average (.274), hits (1316), RBI (631) and doubles (267). Gustavo Nunez and Billy Nowlin finished second and third in the league in batting average respectively.

West Michigan will have their hands full with Great Lakes. The Loons won the second half wild card and finished the season with an 81-59 record. The Loons' roster is full of talented players including Midwest League Co-MVP's Kyle Russell and Dee Gordon.

The first 1,000 fans on September 10 will receive a Jeremy Bonderman bobblehead courtesy of Honda Generators. The bobblehead features Bonderman in his Whitecaps camouflage alternate jersey that he wore during his rehab assignment with West Michigan on May 16. Gates open at 5:30 p.m.

A special Farm Bureau Insurance fireworks show and a post-game party on the Miller Lite House Deck, with rock band The Outer Vibe, will follow the game. Also, the Altogas Thrifty Thursday special is good for all home playoff games. Fans can purchase two hot dogs, 20 oz. beers, 22 oz. sodas and soft pretzels for $2 each. Also, college students can get $5 reserved seats when they show their student ID.
