DAYTON, OH - Cecily Dowd, an 11-year-old from Centerville, will sing the National Anthem on Opening Night Thursday, April 8th. The fifth grade student was selected as the Grand Prize winner of the 11th annual Dayton Daily News National Anthem tryouts, held last month.

"I wanted to try a new experience," said Dowd, who has been taking voice lessons for just over a year. "I feel nervous, but also really excited."

Dowd participates in Musical Theater at the Town Hall Theater in Centerville and loves her voice coach, Becky Barrett-Jones. Last summer, she played the role of the Orphan Kate in 'Annie' at La Comedia. In addition to singing, she enjoys playing softball and swimming in the summertime, not to mention watching the Dragons play with her family.

"I love all the activities going on during the game," Dowd said. "I jumped up and down when I heard that I had won. I was so excited."

Her parents, along with her brothers John and Trevor and sister Corrine, will be among the sold-out crowd to watch her perform.

"I felt that she had excellent stage presence and was extremely poised," said Kaitlin Rohrer, Director of Entertainment for the Dragons. "She's a very special young girl with a great personality and excellent voice quality."

On March 6th and 7th, a panel of local citizens including Dayton Daily News columnists and editors, city officials and community leaders judged the DDN National Anthem Tryouts. The panel made its selections based on voice quality, creative style, stage presence and appearance.
