New York Dragons News Release
A week into training camp, the New York Dragons have made a splash by signing perhaps the biggest free agent still on the market. Offensive specialist Markeith Cooper has signed a one-year deal with the Dragons over the weekend in a move that gives depth to an already stacked group of receivers.
"In Arena Football, you can never have enough offensive weapons," said Dragons Director of Player Personnel Rory Vacco. "There is always room in our arsenal for a great player like Markeith Cooper."
Cooper is an explosive AFL player, while also being one of the smallest in the AFL at 5'6". Last season, Cooper had a breakout year in his first season as the Georgia Force's No. 1 OS. He finished the year as Georgia's leading receiver with 85 catches for 1,089 yards and 24 touchdowns, the latter two marks franchise records. A gifted kickoff returner, Cooper set a league record in the 2003 post season with 153 kickoff return yards, including a 56-yard touchdown, in a quarterfinal playoff game against San Jose.
In his three-season AFL career, he has 151 receptions for 1,928 yards and 37 touchdowns. Cooper has also recorded three rushing scores and five kickoff return scores while registering 3,604 total yards of offense.
Cooper attended Auburn from 1996 to 1999 and also ran track. He was converted to wide receiver from running back in 1998 and in 1999 was tabbed as second-team preseason All-SEC as an all-purpose player.
