Tampa Bay Storm News Release

TAMPA, Fla. – The Tampa Bay Storm re-signed quarterback Stoney Case and added Elfrid Payton, one of the top pass rushers in Canadian Football League history, to their roster, head coach Tim Marcum announced.

Case (QB, 6-3, 200, New Mexico) was a member of the Storm in 2004, serving as the team's third quarterback. He spent the first four games of the year on the 24-man roster before being placed on injured reserve for the remainder of the season.

A veteran NFL quarterback, Case will have a chance to compete for the starting quarterback position this season. He was originally selected in the third round of the 1995 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals. He played for the Cardinals from 1995-1998 and started two games in Arizona in 1997. In the summer of 1999, he signed with the Colts and then joined the Baltimore Ravens for the season. With the Ravens, he started seven of ten games, completing 77-of-170 passes for 988 yards and 3 touchdowns. He finished his NFL career in 2000 with the Detroit Lions, where he played in five games and started three. In 24 career NFL games, Case threw for 1,826 yards and four touchdowns while also rushing for 270 yards and five touchdowns.

As a college player Case became the first player in NCAA history to pass for over 8,000 yards and rush for over 1,000 yards. He starred for the New Mexico Lobos from 1991-94, passing for 9,460 yards and rushing for 1,191 yards. He finished his 42-game career ranked fifth in NCAA history in total offense with 10,651 yards. Case became the ninth player in NCAA history to accumulate 2,500 yards in total offense for three consecutive years and was named the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year in 1994.

Payton (FB/LB, 6-1, 250, Grambling St.) makes his Arena Football debut but is certainly no stranger to professional football. He is one of the top defensive linemen in Canadian Football League history after playing 14 seasons in Canada. He has registered 154 career quarterback sacks and is just four shy from surpassing Grover Covington's CFL career sacks record. Payton already holds the CFL's single-game sacks record after registering five sacks in a game in 1999.

Payton is a four-time CFL All-Star, a seven-time CFL divisional All-Star, and a four-time CFLPA All-Star. He is a 16-time CFL Player of the Week Award winner, a three-time CFL Player of the Month honoree, and was named the CFL's Most Outstanding Defensive Player in 2002. He won a Grey Cup with the Edmonton Eskimos in 2003, and has played in four Grey Cup games.

In 2004, Payton played in 14 regular season games with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He recorded 35 tackles and five sacks, rebounding nicely after suffering a season-ending knee injury just two games into the 2003 season.

The five-time World Champion Storm open the 2005 season on Sunday, January 30, when they host the defending ArenaBowl champion San Jose SaberCats at 3:00 p.m. at the St. Pete Times Forum. Tickets for the 2005 Storm season are on sale now at the St. Pete Times Forum Box Office or at any TicketMaster outlet. Tickets may also be purchased by calling (813) 301-6600 or online at www.tampabaystorm.com.
