Johnson City Doughboys News Release

Johnson City loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth, but fell just short in the end with a 4-1 loss to the Pulaski River Turtles.

The Doughboys (4-6) got a single from Cade Sumbler and walks from Brady Cottom and Steven Ondina to load the bases with two outs in the final frame, but Pulaski's Paco Hernandez struck out the final Johnson City batter to record the save.

The River Turtles (4-6) got a three-run homer from Tommy Woods in the sixth inning that proved to be the difference in the contest.

Joe Vetrano smacked a double in the fourth inning in his Johnson City debut and advanced to third base on a sacrifice from Chyran Cruse before scoring on an RBI groundout from Sumbler. The run gave Johnson City a 1-0 lead, an advantage they held until Pulaski's big sixth inning.

RHP Ty Ruhl (W, 1-1) earned the win on the mound for Pulaski. RHP Chad Rogers (L, 1-1) took the loss for Johnson City. Hernandez (SV, 1) recorded his first save.

The Johnson City pitching staff was stellar all-game, with Ethan Bosacker, Steven Casey, Andrew Ronne, and Gianluca Shinn all turning in lights-out performances. On the night, Doughboys' pitchers combined to record 18 strikeouts with only five hits allowed, delighting the announced crowd of 2,762.

However, one of those five hits was Woods' sixth inning blast, the Pulaski third baseman's second home run of the season.

Johnson City will look to pull out a series split with Pulaski when they take on the River Turtles at TVA Credit Union Ballpark on Wednesday night. First pitch is set for 7 PM.
