Idaho Falls Chukars News Release
The Idaho Falls Chukars nine-game home stand didn't start exactly how they hoped Monday night, as Greybirds ace Sam Selman was roughed up and the Chukars offense failed to show in a 12-3 loss against the Billings Mustangs at Melaleuca Field.
Selman entered the contest having not allowed more than two runs in an outing all season, and with a 0.66 ERA over his last 5 starts. It was evident early, however, that the southpaw was not on his game. Selman quickly matched then surpassed the two runs allowed total by giving up two in the first and another two in the second inning to put IF in a quick 4-0 hole.
Selman's teammates would rally for three runs in the bottom of the second on RBI singles from Diego Goris, Parker Morin and Carlos Garcia, but the 4-3 deficit would be as close as the Chukars would get all night.
After seemingly righting the ship with scoreless innings in the third and fourth, Selman was run from the game in the fifth with another three runs allowed to put Billings on top 7-3. The Mustangs would add three more runs in the seventh and two in the eighth off of relievers Andrew Stueve and David Middendorf to close the game with their 12-3 lead.
The Chukars offense meanwhile never mounted a serious rally after the second frame, with only three total base runners the rest of the way.
The Mustangs bats were led by red-hot first baseman Carlos Sanchez, who went 4-5 with four doubles, four runs scored and three RBI. The four twin baggers tied a Pioneer League record and were a part of seven doubles and 14 total hits for Billings.
Mustangs starting pitcher Sal Romano (5-4) got the best of the Chukars for the second straight start, earning the win while allowing three runs on four hits over his five innings pitched. Selman (5-2) picked up his second straight loss against the Mustangs with a season high seven runs allowed, five earned, on seven hits over five innings pitched. The lefty still struck out seven to increase his Pioneer League leading total to 80.
With the loss the Chukars (11-11) have now dropped three of their four games against the Mustangs (16-6) this season. The two clubs will face off again Tuesday night at 7:15 pm.
