Doubledays Lose to Tigers in 10, 5-4

NORWICH, C.T. - The Auburn Doubledays (17-9) couldn't hold a one run lead in the bottom of the ninth, and eventually fell in 10 innings to the Connecticut Tigers (10-17) on Sunday evening, 5-4. It is the first loss this season for Auburn when holding the lead after eight innings.
The Tigers run in the tenth came off of RHP Derek Self (1-2). Self walked the leadoff hitter in the inning, RF Patrick Smith. DH Zack Kirksey then pushed Smith to second with a sacrifice bunt. Catcher Charlie Neil would foul off a few pitches before finally finding one he could drive up the middle, singling on a ground ball to center field to drive in Smith as the winning run.
Connecticut tied the game at 4-4 in the ninth when CF Jake Stewart leadoff the inning with an infield single. It was another sacrifice bunt that pushed Stewart into scoring position with one out. After a fly out to left field left the Tigers down to their final out, 1B Juaner Aguasvivas delivered with a double to center field, which plated Stewart to tie the game.
Auburn had taken its second lead of the game, 4-3, in the top of the sixth. With two outs LF Estarlin Martinez broke up a Connecticut no-hitter by doubling to the gap in right-center field. DH Craig Manuel followed that up with a single to right, which drove in Martinez from second.
The first three Doubledays runs came in the top of the second, thanks to three errors committed by Tigers SS Luis Cortez. Combined with one walk, a wild pitch, and a passed ball, and Auburn had managed to grab a 3-0 lead without getting a hit. Connecticut tied the game with three runs in the fifth. Stewart drove home Cortez with a double to center field, and then both Stewart and Aguasvivas scored with two outs thanks to a line drive single to left by Smith.
Self suffered the blown save and the loss for Auburn, pitching two innings and allowing two earned runs on three hits and two walks. RHP Brian Rauh got his first start of the season for the Doubledays, lasting five innings and surrendering three earned runs on five hits and three walks, while striking out three. RHP Hunter Scantling (1-0) earned the win for Connecticut, pitching two innings without allowing a hit or a run.
The Doubledays and Tigers wrap up their three game series on Monday July 16. Auburn will send LHP Blake Monar (1-2) to the mound for his fifth start of the year. He will square off against LHP Hua-Wei Lo (1-0) for Connecticut. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
