Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release
NORWICH- A walk-off RBI single by C Charlie Neil (3-4) in the tenth inning gave the Connecticut Tigers (10-17) a 5-4 win against the Auburn Doubledays (17-9) on Sunday evening in front of a crowd of 738. The single marked Neil's first RBI of the season and his three-hit effort was his best of 2012.
Poor defense by the Tigers in the second inning gave Auburn their first lead of the game. A lead off walk to LF Estarlin Martinez (2-3) and two back-to-back fielding errors granted the Doubledays a 1-0 advantage. A double steal put the runners, DH Craig Manuel (1-4) and 3B Carlos Lopez (1-4), in scoring position and another error allowed both Doubledays to score, widening Auburn's lead to 3-0.
The Tigers narrowed Auburn's lead to 3-1 in the fifth inning on an RBI double to centerfield by CF Jake Stewart (2-5) that scored SS Luis Cortez (0-3) from first, who reached base after being hit by a pitch. After two walks to 1B Juaner Aguasvivas (1-4) and 3B Tyler Hanover (0-3), Connecticut scored two more runs to tie the game on a two-run single by RF Patrick Smith (1-3).
Auburn answered Connecticut's fifth inning by adding a run in the top of the sixth inning and regaining the lead to 4-3 on an RBI single to right field by Manuel that scored Martinez, who hit a two-out double to centerfield.
The Tigers tied the game at 4-4 in the ninth inning on an RBI double by Aguasvivas that scored Stewart from first base.
Stewart's effort produced his sixth multi-hit game in a row, which started last Monday against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers.
