CLOSE CALL

Rio Grande Valley Dorados Head Coach Kevin Guy joined several key faces and sports figures in SundayÂ’s edition of The Monitor, as the paper did a Super Bowl predictions feature with Rio Grande Valley sports figures and Monitor staff writers. GuyÂ’s prediction of New England winning 24-20 was one point off the actual 24-21 final, placing him as the closest predictor to the actual score.

A REVIEW OF THIS PAST WEEKÂ’S ANNOUNCED ASSIGNMENTS

Pierre Thomas (WR/DB) 5Â’10 200 LeeÂ’s Summit, Missouri Missouri Western State College

Thomas joins the Dorados as a 23 year-old rookie out of Missouri Western State College, where he completed a four year (2000- 2003) career as the programÂ’s first football consensus all-american after being named First Team by COSIDA (Daktronics), the American Football Coaches Association, and the Associated Press (Little All-America) in 2003. He received the accolades after setting a single-season school record with 14 interceptions in 2003, which broke a 46 year-old Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association record and tied a NCAA Div. II record that had not been met since 1972. His 14 interceptions also led all NCAA levels over the 2003 season. Thomas, who also accomplished the programÂ’s single-game interception record with three (three times), also broke a nine year-old single-season NCAA Div. II record for interception return yards (326) and a career NCAA Div. II record for interception return yards (528), which had been set in the mid-seventies. He rounded out his career playing in the 2004 Whataburger Cactus Bowl, which is a NCAA Div. II all-star game held annually in Kingsville..

Wil Goff (OL/DL) 6Â’5 290 Redlands, CA University of Redlands

Played at his hometown university (Univ. of Redlands) during the 2003 season and finished second on the squad in tackles with 44.5 (23 solo) and also had 6.5 tackles for a loss. He was chosen to the 2003 Aztec Bowl (Cancun, Mexico), which is an annual NCAA Division III All-Star team, as selected by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA), which represents the United States and competes against the best college football players in Mexico. The 24 year-old began his college tenure at Riverside Community College (Riverside, CA) in 1999 and started as a freshman, participating in 10 games and registering 25 tackles and 1.5 sacks. Was heavily recruited by Division I schools to transfer, but suffered a rare life threatening injury in 2000. He ended up earning a medical redshirt that season and regained his health to return for a sophomore season in 2001. That season, he garnered First Team Mission Conference All-Northern Division honors, as he had 48 tackles (34 solo) and 2.5 sacks. He also had an interception, a forced fumble and two fumble recoveries.

As a two-way player for the Vipers, he ranked second on the team defensively with 37 tackles (27 solo) and led the team in pass breakups with 17. On offense, Floyd ranked fifth on the team with 281 all-purpose yards, which included 242 receiving yards off 20 receptions and 7 rushing yards off 5 attempts. He registered six touchdowns on the season (3 receiving, 2 rushing, 1 kickoff return). He notched 231 tackles in four seasons (164 solo) and 19 interceptions. Floyd also returned kickoffs (248 yards on 12 returns) and was an elite punt return specialist.
