Lancaster Stormers News Release
Former Florida Marlins ace Dontrelle Willis fired a one-hit shutout as the Long Island Ducks grabbed the opener of a three-game series, 8-0, at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
Willis (6-3) walked three and struck out five. Lancaster's only hit came in the third when Blake Gailen bounced a high chopper over Willis' head. The 6'4" lefty reacted and tipped the ball with his glove, slowing it down. Josh Barfield charged the play, made a barehanded pickup and a quick snap throw which eluded first baseman Ben Broussard and bounced out of play, giving Gailen second.
The biggest headache for Willis came in the first inning when he missed with 10 of his first 13 pitches, walking Gailen and Tsuyoshi Takashima and falling behind Travis Denker, 2-0. Denker flied to right, and Daryle Ward grounded into a 6-6-3 double play to end the threat.
That was the last time the Barnstormers would get a runner to third base in the game.
Long Island provided Willis with a big cushion in the first inning.
Brian Grening (4-3) retired the first two Ducks batters, but Broussard drilled a double off the fence in right center to keep the inning alive. Bill Hall walked, and Bryant Nelson yanked a single down the right field line to score Broussard with the first run. Joash Brodin followed with a single into right center for the second run, and Adam Bailey singled up the middle to drive in a third. A fourth run crossed the plate when Olmo Rosario fumbled Ralph Henriquez' grounder and was late trying to force Bailey at second.
Danny Perales launched the night's only homer, a solo blast with two outs in the fourth. Long Island added three more off the bullpen in the eighth inning.
Will Savage (4-5) will make the start for the Barnstormers on Saturday evening against left-hander Bill Murphy (0-6). Fireworks will follow. Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; 1600-AM, WPDC; 1390wlan.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app beginning at 6:45.
