Vancouver Giants News Release

Vancouver, B.C. - The Vancouver Giants are excited to announce that the club is teaming up with Don Cherry, his family and the Kidney Foundation of Canada for Don Cherry Night on Tuesday, March 14th, when the G-Men host the Victoria Royals at the Langley Events Centre.

The Giants will wear special Don Cherry jerseys for the game (picture attached) as part of a national effort to increase both awareness and organ transplant rates by 50% over five years. Canada has fallen to 23rd in the world in terms of organ donation rates, and approximately 4,500 Canadians are waiting for an organ with about 80% of them needing a kidney. This is a cause that hits close to home for the Cherry family.

"When I was coaching the Boston Bruins, my son Tim had a transplant," said Don Cherry. "Lucky for him, his sister, Cindy, gave him a kidney. We're promoting organ transplants here, you can do your job, do you part, and step up to the plate."

There will be several auctions, both at the game and online, that will help support the Kidney Foundation of Canada including a full Don Cherry ensemble that was worn on Hockey Night in Canada as well as Giants game worn jerseys. More information on the auctions will be made available in the coming days.

"We're excited to partner with the Cherry family for this worthy cause," said Dale Saip, Giants Senior Vice President. "We encourage all of our fans to register to become organ donors either when they renew their BC Driver's License or online at kidney.bc.ca."
