Newark Pilots ace Dominick Ruscitti was crowned the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League Pitcher of the Year following an outstanding season on the mound for the league champions.
A native of Washingtonville, N.Y., Ruscitti was arguably the most dominating pitcher in the league. He finished the regular season 6-1 in nine appearances with eight starts. His six victories and 1.82 ERA led the league in both categories. Ruscitti was fifth in the league with 49 strikeouts in 59.1 innings.
The Kutztown University rising senior earned the first-ever victory for the first-year Pilots in the season opener against the Watertown Wizards on June 9. He took the mound in the third and pitched five shutout innings en route to a 9-6 win.
His seven scoreless innings against the Elmira Pioneers on August 2 allowed Newark the clinch its spot in the playoffs. The big right-hander fanned seven without yielding a walk.
The right-hander earned two postseason wins for the Pilots. In Game 3 of the West Division Championship Series against the Cooperstown Hawkeyes on August 7, Ruscitti went seven and one-third innings with a game-high eight strikeouts in Newark's 4-3 win.
He then threw three scoreless relief innings against the Amsterdam Mohawks on August 11, leading the Pilots to a 4-3 victory in Game 2 of the PGCBL Championship Series. The Pilots went on to win the Championship Series 7-4 in Game 3 over Amsterdam.
One of Ruscitti's two complete games earned him the PGCBL Pitcher of the Week Award for Week 4. He surrendered just one run in a four-hitter against Glens Falls on July 8. Newark won the contest against the national-ranked Golden Eagles 2-1.
Ruscitti started the PGCBL All-Star Game for the West Division on July 18. He pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the first. He was also named to the 2011 PGCBL All-League First Team.
