SUGAR LAND, Texas - The Sugar Land Skeeters dropped their second-straight 11-inning loss to the Somerset Patriots, 11-4, despite Jeff Dominguez hitting for the first cycle in team history. The loss drops the Skeeters to 59-65 on the year with 16 games to play.
Jeff Dominguez logged a historic night for the Skeeters, becoming the first player to hit for the cycle in a Sugar Land uniform. The Skeeters all-purpose player logged a single through the left side in the first inning, blasted a home run to right in the fourth, doubled down the right field line in the fifth and tripled to the right-center alley in the seventh to achieve the feat. He finished the night 4-for-4 with a run, two RBI and a walk on the monumental occasion.
Somerset jumped out to a quick lead in the top of the first against starter, Sean Gallagher. Nate Spears hit a one-out double to right-center. After a flyout, Michael Burgess lifted a two-run home run to straightaway center to give the Patriots a 2-0 advantage.
The Patriots pushed across two more runs in the top of the second to extend the lead. After a pair of quick outs, James Skelton worked a walk to extend the inning and Thomas Neal doubled to left-center to put a pair in scoring position. Spears followed with a two-run single into left, but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double.
The Skeeters started chipping away at the deficit in the bottom of the fourth. Dominguez led off the inning with a solo shot to right, narrowing the gap to 4-1. The long ball from Dominguez was his second in as many nights, giving the infielder four in 37 games with Sugar Land.
Sugar Land narrowed the deficit to one in the bottom of the fifth with another long ball. Patrick Palmeiro singled through the left-side of the infield to open the inning before Denny Almonte launched William Oliver's 1-1 offering to left, moving the score to 4-3.
Dominguez accomplished history in the bottom of the seventh, driving in the tying run. Renny Osuna reached on a fielder's choice after Almonte was hit-by-pitch to start the inning. With two outs, Dominguez rifled Anthony Collazo's 1-2 offering into the right-center alley for the triple needed to complete the cycle.
In the top of the 11th, Somerset picked up seven runs against relief pitchers Cory VanAllen and Kelly Cross who made his first professional appearance on the mound to close out the 11-4 setback.
The Skeeters continue the seven-game homestand at the friendly confines of Constellation Field tomorrow against Somerset. First pitch with the Patriots is slated for 6:05 p.m. with gates opening at 5. Tickets are still available for the final games at Constellation Field this season.
