Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
(Lancaster PA., September 3rd 2015) ---Southern Maryland, needing a win to salvage the series pulled out a tight victory in Lancaster by the final of 7-6.
Southern Maryland cracked the scoreboard first in the game scoring a run in the first on a Craig Maddox double allowing Fred Lewis to score to make it 1-0. Lancaster counter punched in the bottom of the frame. Jerry Owens led off the inning with a line drive single to left, and advanced to second on a groundout by Zach Collier. RHP Justin Berg then uncorked a wild pitch to send Owens over to third base for Kent Matthes, who lashed a single to right to score Owens to knot the game at 1-1.
Lancaster took the lead for the first time in the bottom of the second inning. Lance Zawadzki started the rally by banging a single to center field. Three batters later with Anderson Feliz at the plate Zawadzki stole third base. On the very next pitch Berg's slider kicked away from catcher Keith Castillo for a pass ball allowing Zawadzki to score to make it 2-1 Barnstormers.
In the top of the third, Southern Maryland tied the game when Casey Stevenson lifted a homerun over the wall in right field. In the bottom half of the inning, Kent Matthes reached base with a one out single, and scored two batters later when Brian Cavazos-Galves ripped a single to bring the score to 3-2 Lancaster.
Fast forward to the top of the sixth inning, Craig Maddox lined a double to right center field with one out to put the tying run in scoring position. The next hitter Zach Wilson climbed in and roped a double to left center to score Maddox to tie the game at 3-3. In the top of the seventh, Casey Frawley scored on a 6-4-3 double play groundout off the bat of Antone DeJesus to pad the Blue Crabs lead to 5-3.
Southern Maryland broke out offensively in the top of the inning, and Keith Castillo tripled with one out. Antone DeJesus then reached base on an error by the first baseman Cavazos-Galves to put baserunners at the corners. Fred Lewis climbed in next, and laced a single out to center field to score Castillo. The next hitter Casey Stevenson walked to reload the bases, and on the very first offering to Zach Wilson, RHP Blake Hassebrock uncorked a wild pitch to allowing Antone DeJesus to score to bring the score to 6-3. A couple of batters later Bryant Nelson ripped a single to right field to allowing Fred Lewis to score to make it 7-3 Southern Maryland.
Things got very dicey in the bottom of the ninth. RHP Cody Eppley came out of the bullpen to pitch, and dealt a walk to Brian Cavazos-Galves to start things. Lance Zawazdki then ripped a double out to left center to score Cavazos-Galves all the way from first. A couple of batters later, Charlie Cutler singled to put runners at first and third. After Anderson Feliz struck out Jerry Owens slashed a single to right field to score Lance Zawadzki to make it 7-5. Zach Collier dug into the batter's box and banged out a single to center to score Charlie Cutler to make it a one run ballgame. Cody Eppley was then able to stop the bleeding by inducing a fly ball out to center field to end the ballgame, and give the Blue Crabs the 7-6 win.
RHP Justin Berg got the spot start on the mound for Southern Maryland, going six innings, allowing three runs, on six hits, and striking out three to pick up the victory. Offensively, eight of the nine hitters in the starting lineup for the Blue Crabs got a hit, while Craig Maddox had a gigantic night at the dish, going 4-5 with two RBIs.
