MILWAUKEE, WI (July 9, 2007) -- West Allis native Chad Dombrowski was the second player taken in the Major Indoor Soccer League expansion draft on Monday, going to the Detroit Ignition.

Dombrowski, 26, played in 71 regular-season games over three seasons with the Wave. In 2006-07, he scored a career-best eight goals despite playing in 22 games. He is one of five soccer-playing brothers who came up through UW-Milwaukee; Neil and Tighe Dombrowski also are professional players.

Thirty players were taken in 10 rounds of three choices each to stock the rosters of the Orlando Sharks, New Jersey Ironmen and MISL Monterrey, all entering the league this year. Many of the top picks were traded for more established players before the draft.

Seven field players and a keeper were protected by each of the six returning teams. A team could lose a maximum of five players, protecting two each time one was chosen. Two of the Wave players taken were on their 40-man roster and did not play last season: Matt Schmidt, taken fourth overall by Philadelphia; and Angel Rivillo, chosen 10th overall by Philadelphia.

Also picked were midfielder Marcelo Santos, 21st overall by Orlando, and midfielder Johnny Torres, 25th overall by Monterrey. Torres has announced his retirement to become a graduate assistant at his alma mater, Creighton University. Santos scored seven points in 19 games during his rookie season but missed the latter third of the year with an ankle injury.

"We're extremely sad to have these players go, but at the same time, we're excited to have these new teams enter our league," said Keith Tozer, head coach and vice president of soccer operations of the Milwaukee Wave.

Milwaukee did have the first selection in the sixth round after trading Victor Quiroz from its 40-man roster to Monterrey on June 19. The Wave picked up Ibrahim Kante, a 6-foot-3, 215-pound defender on the Baltimore Blast's 40-man roster. Kante has 23 goals and 14 assists in 52 games over parts of three seasons with Baltimore, Kansas City and St. Louis.
