WESTPORT, CT - Monday afternoon the Major Indoor Soccer League held its' expansion draft for the three new teams entering the league in 2007-08, MISL Monterrey, the Orlando Sharks and the New Jersey Ironmen. The Storm managed to get the second pick in the second round, fifth pick overall in a trade with New Jersey and picked perennial All-MISL forward Carlos "Chile" Farias from the Detroit Ignition. Chicago did lose defender Gaston Pernia to Philadelphia; forward Chris Handsor to California, forward Jorge Valle and defender Sinisa Alebic to Orlando.
Chicago GM and COO Brian Loftin commented on the draft. "Every expansion draft is difficult. When you finish the season with the second best record in the league, your goals is to retain the core of the team," Loftin stated. "The positive is that we only lost three active players and we still managed to pick up one of the most talented players in the MISL."
Farias comes to the Storm with a wealth of experience and talent. The Santiago Chile native was named All-MISL First Team in 2003-04 as well as All-MISL Second Team in 2002-03, 2004-05 and 2005-06. A two-time all-star (2003 and 2004), he has been to the MISL Championship game in each of the last two seasons and won a championship in 2004 while with Baltimore.
Last season with the Detroit Ignition, Farias ranked 13th in the league in points and second on the Ignition with 58. He scored 19 goals and 16 assists with two game-winning goals. Over his career, "Chile" has played in 169 games, scoring 124 goals, 152 assists for 346 points. In the post-season he's played in 19 games scoring 9 goals, 18 assists for 27 points.
Chicago didn't get out of the draft without losing players. Using the seventh overall pick they received from Monterrey via trade, the Philadelphia KiXX picked defender Gaston Pernia with the seventh pick overall. Pernia, an original member of the Storm since the teams' inception, returns to Philly where he played in 1998-99. The six year veteran has scored 22 goals and 27 assists, with 277 blocks over the course of his career.
With the very next pick that they received via trade with New Jersey, the California Cougars chose target man Chris Handsor from Chicago. Handsor played one season with the Storm, playing 23 games scoring 13 goals and ten assists.
Orlando used the 18th pick overall to take forward Jorge Valle and the 30th and final pick to take defender Sinisa Alebic. Another original member of the Storm, Valle has played all three of the Storm's seasons scoring 28 goals and 19 assists. Alebic played in only 11 games and notched one assist.
The MISL Expansion Draft was created to add players to the three new teams entering the league in 2007-08, MISL Monterrey, the Orlando Sharks and the New Jersey Ironmen. The MISL Team rosters were designated a maximum of eight (8) players as "protected" for that team's roster (maximum of one (1) goalkeeper) for the 2007-08 MISL season. The players not designated as protected ("unprotected") were eligible for selection by MISL Monterrey, New Jersey, or Orlando. Players selected in the 2007 MISL College Draft were excluded from the 2007 MISL Expansion Draft. Current MISL teams could only lose a maximum of five (5) players during the Expansion Draft. Once a player was selected from an existing team, the team was allowed to return two (2) unprotected player to its protected Designation Roster.
