Abilene Prairie Dogs News Release
SAN ANGELO, TX - The Prairie Dogs were due for a flop. After the heavy hitting middle of the order and hard-to-hit bullpen carried the club to six wins in its last nine games, the Colts won going away in game six of an eight game series, 8-3.
San Angelo came bursting out of the gates on Saturday night after Ronnie Gaines and J.J. Sherrill singled to start the bottom of the first. After Cory Patton sandwiched a pair of fly outs with a walk to set the stage for Jamar Walton, and the nine-year pro from Virginia did not squander the opportunity as he lashed a bases-clearing triple into the gap in left-centerfield to provide the Colts with the first runs of the game and a 3-0 lead.
Mike Hart, who made his first start of the season after three relief appearances, allowed his first run when Gunner Glad slashed a run-scoring single in the top of the second - Saturday marked Glad's first appearance in the starting lineup since May 31.
Glad, who recorded his first save on Thursday, ignited the Dogs' fifth inning rally as well. The Tulsa native blasted a leadoff double, and Zach Welch drove in his third run of the season with a single to right field. Two batters later, Jason Martin drove Welch home with an R.B.I. groundout to even the score at 3-3.
Four days after tossing eight innings in a victory, Prairie Dogs' starter Woods Fines did not allow a hit in the second, third, or fourth innings, however, he labored in the fifth. The righty allowed a leadoff single to Gaines and Sherrill followed with his second single of the game. One batter later, Daryl Jones drove in his 19th run of the year with another single to help the Colts regain the lead, 4-3. With one out, Fines balked in Sherrill from third and was lifted after walking Landon Camp. David Slovak mopped up the mess by getting Walton to ground into a fielder's choice and retiring Jason Crosland on a fly out to left.
Trailing 6-3, the Dogs would string together only two hits the rest of the way. Russell John emerged from the bullpen in his first outing with San Angelo and pitched three scoreless innings.
The Colts tacked on a run in the seventh on Camp's R.B.I. single and scored the final tally of the game on Gaines third hit of the night, a run-scoring single to right in the eighth.
Cory Patton retired the side in order in the ninth and the Colts evened the eight-game series at three, winning 8-3.
The Dogs return to San Angelo on Sunday night for game seven. Catch the game on 106.9 KLGD or on the internet at abileneprairiedogs.com beginning with the pregame show at 5:55.
