Dodgers Sweep Doubleheader

(Lakeland, FL) - After nearly six hours and 45 minutes of baseball, the Vero Beach Dodgers swept a doubleheader from the Lakeland Tigers at Joker Marchant Stadium Friday night (and Saturday morning). The first game lasted 12 innings before Blake DeWitt knocked in the winning run for a 9-8 victory. Travis Denker and Xavier Paul each hit homers in the second game for a 12-9 win. The Dodgers next travel to St. Lucie for a 7:00 PM game Saturday. In a marathon first game, the teams traded several ties and leads to an 8-8 stalemate. Cory Dunlap hit two separate towering 2-run home runs and finished the game 3-4. DeWitt knocked in the winning run in the 12th with a 2-out single that scored Jeremy Todd from third base. Todd reached on his first hit in nearly two weeks. Zach Hammes earned the win in Game One to advance his record to 3-2. Kyle Wilson struck out the side in the bottom of the 12th for his 5th save. Wesley Wright contributed 3 2/3 scoreless innings from the 7th thru the 10th to keep it tied. The nightcap again showcased the offenses. Paul and Denker each hit 2-run homers, while Victor Mendez hit a grand slam for Lakeland. It was his second slam of the series and his third home run of the year against the Dodgers. Every Dodger reached base with Paul and Hoffman delivering 3-hit nights. In another back-and-forth affair, the Dodgers pulled away with a 6-run 6th inning. They had just surrendered the lead, but sent 12 batters to the plate in the inning. DeWitt again delivered a key hit. His bases-loaded double scored two runs and lifted the Dodgers from an 8-7 deficit to a 9-8 lead.
