Dodgers Strengthen Pitching Staff
August 16, 2004 - Florida State League (FSL1)
Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release
The Vero Beach Dodgers' ailing pitching staff received a boost today when RHP Alvis Ojeda was promoted from class low-A Columbus and LHP Justin Simmons earned his ticket from the Gulf Coast Dodgers. To make room for the additions, the Dodgers placed RHPs Jarod Plummer and Dimas Reina on the disabled list.
Ojeda was 8-2 with a 3.59 ERA in 30 appearances for Columbus, allowing only 74 hits in 85.1 innings for a .231 opposing batting average. He had struck out 86 batters and allowed only 29 walks. Throughout his four-year professional career, the Maracaibo, VZ native has gone 19-9 with a 2.76 ERA.
Simmons, a former All-American at the University of Texas, was a 17th-round draft choice this season. He was 1-0 with a 0.92 ERA for the Gulf Coast Dodgers, appearing in seven games. The opposition was batting only .152 against him.
Neither Plummer nor Reina have pitched for the Dodgers in the past week. Their first place lead over the second place Palm Beach Cardinals is 3.5 games entering Monday's play.
