Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release

Jupiter, FL– The Vero Beach Dodgers increased their first place lead Monday night to a season-high 4.5 games by knocking off second place Palm Beach 5-1 at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter. Vero Beach got to RHP Josh Teekel for the first time in the fourth inning as DH Brian Sprout broke the scoreless tie with a bases-loaded groundout to shortstop, scoring C Russell Martin, who had singled earlier in the inning. LF Alex Requena would account for the second run of the inning when his infield single scored 3B Andy LaRoche.

Meanwhile, RHP Jonathan Broxton was cruising before leaving the game with his team on top 2-0 after the fifth inning. “The Bull” allowed only two hits, no walks and no runs, striking out three in his five innings of work. He gave way to LHP Eric Stults, who would allow only an unearned run in two innings of relief.

Vero Beach would add single runs in the sixth and eighth to make it 4-1. SproutÂ’s two-out RBI-double in the sixth scored 1B Trey Dyson from first. LaRoche, who had walked and advanced two bases on an error in the eighth, scored the fourth run on a wild pitch. The final Dodger tally came in the ninth when CF Jereme MilonÂ’s infield single scored Requena.

After Stults left the game, RHP Alvis Ojeda made his first outing of the season in a Dodger uniform, retiring the side in order in the eighth inning, bridging the gap to RHP Rich Bartlett, who tossed the ninth inning to close out the win.

The Dodgers return to Holman Stadium for one game Tuesday night against the Brevard County Manatees. RHP Jonathan Broxton (9-6, 3.36) will make the start for Vero Beach Dodgers with the first pitch scheduled for 7:00 PM.
