Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release
(Vero Beach, FL) - The Vero Beach Dodgers let a 4-1 lead slip away but came back to beat the Palm Beach Cardinals 6-5 at Holman Stadium Monday night. After the Dodgers took the lead in the 6th, Brian Akin and Kyle Wilson kept Palm Beach off the scoreboard to give Vero Beach their lone win of the series. The Dodgers have an Off Day Tuesday but return to action in Daytona Tuesday night at 7:00 PM.
The Cardinals scored a quick run in the first, but the Dodgers put together one of their strongest offensive innings of the season in the bottom half. Jimmy Rohan doubled with one out and Blake DeWitt singled him in to tie the score. Ryan Carter walked, then Travis Denker doubled in DeWitt. Xavier Paul singled in Carter. The lead ballooned to 4-1 when Paul stole second and a throwing error from the catcher allowed Denker to come home from third base.
Starter Julio Pimentel kept the Cards bats quiet until the 6th. Ryan Barthelemy led off with a double, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly. After a walk and a flyout, Tyler Greene grounded a ball that looked as if it would end the inning. However a bad throw brought in a run to make it 4-3. A run-scoring double from Matt Shepherd tied it and Jason Motte gave the Cardinals a 5-4 lead with a single.
Vero Beach was again able to immediately answer. In the bottom of the sixth, Jamie Hoffman singled with one out and Ryan Russ was hit by a pitch. Russ then got caught in a rundown which eventually led to Hoffman being thrown at third. Russ advaned to second on the play and scored the tying run on a single by Rohan.
Cardinals LF Joe Mather tried to throw out Russ at home, but his throw went wild and Rohan ended up at third. A wild pitch from reliever Matt Scherer plated Rohan with what turned out to be the winning run.
Xavier Paul finished the night 3-4. Rohan, DeWitt and Hoffman each chipped in two hits apiece. The win improved the Dodgers record in one-run games to 3-10, including 2-2 over the last four games.
NOTE: The Dodgers' rainout against Daytona April 22 will be made up at Jackie Robinson ballpark on Thursday May 4. The first game will start at 6:00 PM and each game will last 7 innings. The game is made up in Daytona because the Cubs do not return to Holman Stadium in the First Half of the season.
