Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release
(St. Lucie, FL) - Caleb Stewart's walk-off home run with two outs in the ninth, lifted the St. Lucie Mets to a 6-3 win over the Vero Beach Dodgers Friday night at Tradition Field. The Dodgers had tied the score in the top of the ninth on a Shane Justis single. The series goes back to Vero Beach Saturday night at 7:00 PM on Downtown Vero Beach Night. Brent Leach struck out his first two batters in the bottom of the ninth for Vero Beach. However he hit Mike Carp and Jesus Flores singled. That prompted a pitching change, but Stewart connected off Zach Hammes for his 12th home run of the season. Vero tied it in the top of the ninth against Mets closer Carlos Muniz. Drew Locke singled with one out and Xavier Paul walked. With two down, Justis blooped a single to right-center that fell between three Mets fielders to score Locke, tying the game at three. Both starting pitchers threw well but did not figure in the decision. Alberto Bastardo for the Dodgers went seven complete innings for the second time this year. He allowed two runs on seven hits and struck out four. Salvador Aguilar for St. Lucie matched Bastardo's seven innings. He, too, allowed two runs on seven hits. The Mets took the lead in the first inning. Fernando Martinez led off with a single and scored on Mike Carp's two-out double. Vero Beach matched St. Lucie in the second. Locke led off with a double and Paul singled him to third. Ryder Mathias then grounded into a force play that scored Locke to tie it at one. St. Lucie went back on top in the third when Cory Coles singled in Jose Coronado, who had tripled. The Dodgers answered in the fifth when Justis tripled and scored on a wild pitch. The Dodgers fell behind in the bottom of the eighth when Jonathan Malo doubled home Caleb Stewart.
