Clearwater Threshers News Release
(CLEARWATER, FL) - In just their 60th home opening out of a scheduled 70, The Clearwater Threshers of the Florida State League set a new record for single season attendance on Friday night. An announced crowd of 3,276 witnessed the Western Division leading Clearwater Threshers best the Dunedin Blue Jays by a score of 6 - 3.
Tonight's total sent the Threshers 2006 attendance to a record 137,462 fans, the most ever in a single season. The Phillies began play in Clearwater as the Clearwater Phillies in 1985. The previous mark of 135,073 was set in 2004, the first year the Threshers began play at Bright House Networks Field.
"It is a tribute to our hard working Clearwater staff, and a beautiful ballpark, but most importantly it reflects on the fans here in Clearwater and Pinellas County," said John Timberlake, Threshers General Manager. Timberlake also attributes the increase in numbers to the team on the field. "We have been fortunate in that the Phillies organization has provided a quality product on the field and (manager) Greg Legg and his coaches have done an outstanding job this year." The Threshers began the action on Friday evening with a one game lead in the FSL's West division.
With another eight home games on the schedule, the Threshers have an opportunity to shatter the previous record. "We have been blessed with great weather this year. If that continues, with the special events we still have upcoming, we have a chance to really do some special numbers," said Timberlake. He added, "It's rewarding to our staff because we started last fall with a great game plan and have been able to follow it through. But the real difference is the fans. They have just been outstanding."
The Threshers return home next weekend and host Sarasota on Friday evening for "Pitch For Pink" - Breast Cancer Awareness Night. Threshers players will wear pink jerseys which will be auctioned off during the game and given to the winners immediately following the game. Ticket proceeds will benefit the Susan Cheek Needler Cancer Center at Morton Plant Mease Hospital and will be used for Breast Cancer treatment and research.
