Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release

(Tampa, FL) - P.J. Piliterre hit a 2-out game-winning single in the bottom of the 11th to lift the Tampa Yankees over the Vero Beach Dodgers at Legends Field Monday night. Cole Bruce went 2-5 and drove in both runs for the Dodgers, who dropped to 3-14 in one-run games this year. The series continues Tuesday night at 7:00 PM with Scott Elbert on the mound for the Dodgers.

Marcos Vechionacci led off the 11th for Tampa with a single off reliever Zach Hammes (2-2). He was sacrificed to second and after a walk, Hammes struck out Ben Himes for the second out. Piliterre then delivered the game-winning hit, which would have gone for extra bases had the lead runner not ended the game.

Vero held a brief lead in the middle of the game. With two outs in the 6th, Blake DeWitt reached on an error and Jeremy Todd walked. Bruce then delivered a double off the wall in center to score both runs, making it 2-1.

The lead was short-lived when the Yankees' Matt Carson lofted a two-out homer just inside the foul pole down the 318-foot left field line to tie the score. The homer came off starter Chris Malone, who dealt seven solid innings in the no-decision. Matt Merricks also came off the DL and tossed three scoreless relief innings before giving way in the 11th.

Tampa held a 1-0 lead for the first half of the game. Carson belted a sacrifice fly in the 1st inning for the game's only run until the 6th. Yankees starter Jeffrey Marquez was in control early. He set down 11 Dodgers in a row at one point, but left in the 6th after Bruce's double. Relievers Paul Thorp, Jeff Kenard and eventual winner Chase Wright held Vero to two baserunners over the final five innings.
