Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release
Vero Beach, FLâ The first place Vero Beach Dodgers kept it rolling with their third straight win Tuesday night, a 7-3 decision over the Brevard County Manatees at Holman Stadium. They now have a season-best five-game lead over the second place Palm Beach Cardinals. LHP Mike Megrew survived a rough beginning, as he allowed three runs on four hits and 34 pitches in the first inning, going on to strike out eight batters over five innings. He did not allow another run after the tough first frame.
The Dodgers trailed by the 3-0 score into the bottom of the third inning when they struck for a pair of two-run homers to take the lead for good. 2B Delwyn Young's 22nd homer scored SS Chin-Lung Hu to get Vero Beach on the board before LF Brian Sprout's 11th long ball plated 1B Trey Dyson.
Vero Beach would add three more runs in the fifth inning. C Russell Martin's two-run bases-loaded single was the highlight with Young scoring all the way from first on a throwing error to cap their scoring.
After Megrew's exit, LHP Justin Simmons made his first appearance of the season for the Dodgers after being promoted from the Gulf Coast League the day prior. He threw three scoreless innings in relief before LHP Jamaal Hamilton tossed the final frame to seal the win. Megrew (6-5) earned his first victory since June 25th, while the loss fell to RHP Justin Echols (0-4).
The Dodgers head to Daytona Wednesday night for a 7:00 PM start. RHP Casey Hoorelbeke (5-4, 3.88) will get the nod for the Dodgers as they play the first of three games in two days against the Cubs.
